Dog: Afghan Hound
Origins: A native of the mountains and plains of Afghanistan, possibly with ancestors originating in Iran (known as Persia at that time).
Size: Large. Males may be 68 – 74cm tall at the shoulder.
Physical Appearance: Very elegant and dignified. Long, silky coat that emphasizes the magnificence of the dog’s carriage, movements, and line. Long, narrow face, and low-set ears.
Characteristics: Affectionate and good-natured, but can be aloof; highly strung, intelligent.
Colors: All colors.
Special Facts: The Afghan Hound’s coat looks most stylish and luxurious, but it was actually developed to cope with the harshness of Afghanistan’s climate! Needs daily grooming to keep its hair in good order. Sometimes employed as a racing dog.
