Dog: Keeshond
Origins: A member of the Spitz group of dogs, and the Dutch national breed. It got its name after a dog owned by political party leader Cornelius de Gyselaer, nicknamed “Kees,” became the mascot of the Dutch Patriots. Before that, it was called Dutch Barge Dog because it was popular as a watchdog with owners of small boats.
Size: Medium. About 17 inches at the shoulder.
Physical Appearance: A furry dog! Two-layered black-tipped coat in grayish shades, a large ruff and curled tail. Pointed ears and muzzle. Markings around the eyes resemble spectacles, and with the paler-colored fur on the legs, the dog seems to be wearing trousers.
Characteristics: Intelligent, outgoing, active, adaptable, friendly but a good watchdog.
Colors: Gray and black mixed.
Special Facts: The Keeshond is most closely related to the Pomeranian. The name is pronounced as “Kaze-hond.”
