Dog: Basset Hound

Origins: Most likely originated in France—“basset” means “dwarf” in French! Bred as pack hunting dogs.

Size: Medium. Only about 15 inches (38cm) tall at the shoulder, but packs more weight (up to 60lbs or 27kg) than many taller dogs!

Physical Appearance: Doleful, serious expression due to the sad-looking eyes, which show a bit of the lower eyelid. Long, floppy ears, short legs, smooth and short-haired coat.

Characteristics: Affectionate, calm, can be obstinate.

Colors: Usually brown and white, but may be tricolor or lemon and white.

Special Facts: With their extremely short legs, longish bodies, floppy ears, and dropping mouths, Basset Hounds may look clumsy and slow, but they actually have great stamina and are quite athletic.

Dog: Dachshund

Origins: Bred to hunt badgers, so the breed was ideally short-legged and narrow to be able to enter holes underground. The name means “badger dog” in German.

Size: Standard (around 20 to 26 lbs) or Miniature (up to 11 lbs), is smooth-haired, long-haired, and wire-haired varieties.

Physical Appearance: Whichever the coat type, a dachshund should have a long body, short legs, and a well-muscled frame.

Characteristics: Active, loyal, brave, independent but can be trained to be obedient.

Colors: All colors, including dappled coats. However, show dogs should not be white.

Special Facts: Because of their long spines, dachshunds are prone to back problems, so they should be discouraged from jumping up to or down from any place or object too high to be within easy reach.

Dog: Afghan Hound

Origins: A native of the mountains and plains of Afghanistan, possibly with ancestors originating in Iran (known as Persia at that time).

Size: Large. Males may be 68 – 74cm tall at the shoulder.

Physical Appearance: Very elegant and dignified. Long, silky coat that emphasizes the magnificence of the dog’s carriage, movements, and line. Long, narrow face, and low-set ears.

Characteristics: Affectionate and good-natured, but can be aloof; highly strung, intelligent.

Colors: All colors.

Special Facts: The Afghan Hound’s coat looks most stylish and luxurious, but it was actually developed to cope with the harshness of Afghanistan’s climate! Needs daily grooming to keep its hair in good order. Sometimes employed as a racing dog.
