It got its name after a dog owned by political party leader Cornelius de Gyselaer, nicknamed “Kees,” became the mascot of the Dutch Patriots. Before that, it was called Dutch Barge Dog because it was popular as a watchdog with owners of small boats.

Size: Medium. About 17 inches at the shoulder.

Physical Appearance: A furry dog! Two-layered black-tipped coat in grayish shades, a large ruff and curled tail. Pointed ears and muzzle. Markings around the eyes resemble spectacles, and with the paler-colored fur on the legs, the dog seems to be wearing trousers.

Characteristics: Intelligent, outgoing, active, adaptable, friendly but a good watchdog.

Colors: Gray and black mixed.

Special Facts: The Keeshond is most closely related to the Pomeranian. The name is pronounced as “Kaze-hond.”

Characteristics: Affectionate, loyal, energetic, brave; good with family but may be aggressive towards strangers.

Colors: All colors and markings acceptable.

Special Facts: Eyes may be blue or brown, or one of each color. Underneath the upper, coarser coat is a soft, downy, white undercoat that sheds itself in seemingly endless tufts once or twice a year!

Origins: Bred by monks at the Hospice of Saint Bernard in the Swiss Alps in the 17th century, for search and rescue work. The dogs saved the lives of countless travelers lost in the mountains.

Size: Large and tall, some 71cm at the shoulder. With the biggest individuals weighing in at 91kg, this is possibly the heaviest breed in the world.

Physical Appearance: Muscular. Thick coat, may be rough or smooth. Head large in proportion to body. Face has a kind, sad expression.

Characteristics: Brave, intelligent, kind, trainable, steady.

Colors: Orange and white, mahogany-brindle and white, red-brindle and white.

Special Facts: Saint Bernards are popularly pictured as wearing collars with a little barrel containing brandy to revive stranded, freezing travelers. However, it seems the monks at the hospice never used brandy; in fact, alcohol hastens dehydration and heat-loss. So the cask of booze is probably a myth!
